Neighborhood Services

St. Aloysius Community Center had its beginning with the arrival of the Franciscan friars in 1992. Encouraged by Archbishop Vigneron, the Friars are dedicated to following Jesus by living and working among the poor through the community of St. Aloysius Parish.

St. Aloysius is situated in a widely diverse area of downtown Detroit. We work with all of the people in the neighborhood to address needs of companionship, food, clothing, and emergency shelter.

And we go beyond this.

We also focus on the critical needs of the tenants of many low-income housing buildings in the area. Our parish nurse works to address the Health and Wholeness issues within our community-at-large.

Recently, the physical plant of our Community Center had to close. We are now attempting to provide all of these services in a smaller fashion — on the streets and in the community housing areas. This ad gentes style of ministry means we are now more focused on going to the people, rather than them coming to us.

St. Aloysius is often called Everybody’s Church; so today we focus on taking the church to the people.

Neighborhood Services Donation Gift Cards

So often we wonder what we can give to that special person who always says they do not need another gift. We all know them... They’re happy with what they have and do not need anything else.

St. Aloysius offers you an opportunity to make a donation to our Neighborhood Services in the name of that special someone.

Wheels of Warmth

A brief documentary by Mandi Wright tells the story of the bicycle cart street ministry of St Aloysius Parish.

Volunteers load up old fashioned three wheeled bicycle carts with warm food and drinks, as well as seasonal clothing which they distribute to the poor and homeless on the streets of downtown Detroit.

Help St. Al’s when you Shop at GFS Marketplace

The Neighborhood Services ministries is participating in a program with Gordon Food Service to receive up to a 10% rebate of all qualified funds spent each quarter when you sign up for the St. Al’s/GFS FunFunds program. Fun Funds is a year-round rebate program. Membership is free, and purchases made by members count toward the rebate.

In addition, all participants will receive a St. Aloysius donation voucher worth $10.00 with the purchase of $50.00 or more from any GFS Marketplace store when you use your membership card.
